What to Do

For “free” days or when you want to do your own thing

Wiesbaden offers a unique blend of spa town history, cultural attractions, and modern amenities, making it an ideal destination for relaxation and exploration. It's known for its elegant architecture, luxurious thermal hot springs, and vibrant cultural scene, including the world famous Rheingau Music Festival and the world’s longest wine bar (Rheingau Wein Fest), both which are happening during the week of the wedding.

EAT & DRINK

For cheap wine and German snack fare, head down to the Rheingau Weinfest, where you’ll find options from over 100 wine stands. Get a glass, find a table, and sample to your heart’s content. For affordable Italian lunch specials, wander into Goldgasse, Wiesbaden’s quaint cobblestoned alley packed with Italian restaurants. You can often score lunch, wine, and coffee for under €18. Some of Alice’s favourite spots include Langehof, Zum Kapellchen, Baiken, and the local Currywurst stand. Don’t leave without trying a German pretzel and Spundekäs. If you want to get out of the bustling city, hop over to Eltville and sip a Riesling right along the Rhine.

PLAY

There’s more to do than drink wine (though there’s plenty of that, too). Ride up the vintage cable car up Wiesbaden’s scenic hillside with the Nerobergbahn. At the top: sweeping views, shady walking paths, and the golden-domed Russian Orthodox Church. Also right next to Opelbad, an luxurious outdoor pool that overlooks the city and offers drinks and snacks. Treat yourself to a thermal spa day at the Kaiser-Friedrich-Therme (historic & steamy) or Thermalbad Aukammtal (modern & splashy). Book a wine tasting or stroll into a winery. The Weinfest also has live music in the evenings, and dancing in the streets is encouraged.

EXPLORE

Use your free time to soak in the culture… or just the sun. Wiesbaden’s old town has beautiful architecture, cafes, markets, and squares to linger in. You’ll find a peaceful green oasis at the Kurpark behind the Kurhaus. Or, catch a concert! The Rheingau Music Festival is happening during our wedding week! From classical music in candlelit monasteries to jazz in vineyards, it’s worth checking out if you’re craving a cultural night out. Mainz is just 15 minutes by train, where you can check out the Gutenberg Museum or grab lunch by the cathedral. Want to hit two birds with one stone? Head out to Schloss Vollrads (a venue we almost chose) or Schloss Johanissberg for castle spotting, music, and wine tasting.

We understand that planning activities and trips in a place you’ve never been can feel overwhelming. If you’d like assistance on planning a day based on your interests (whether cultural, historical, or artistically-inclined), Alice’s family is here to help closer to the event. If you need any help at all, are looking for suggestions, or help with coordinating a trip, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Alice and Jessiah and we’ll put you in touch with the right person. Markus (Alice’s dad) is also going to host a few separate “Guest with a Quest” Zoom calls closer to the date for those wanting help to plan trips.
